MARANHÃO IS GOLD

Photographys | Brasil | 2021

In her photographic work, MARANHÃO IS GOLD, Izabela uses photography as a tool to get closer to documentary cinema, eternalizing people and landscapes in the small riverside communities of Alcântara and Santo Amaro, during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021. Maranhão was one of the first states in Brazil to have over 90% of the population vaccinated and to reduce restrictions on tourism. Much of the population's income is turned to the huge concentration of people who receive annually between May and August to visit the sand desert and natural pools that form in the region. But what the photographs gradually reveal to us is that behind the region's exuberant beauty and wealth, the ruins of the empire and the social ills of a population are hidden.
