Editor / Director / Producer
Izabela Silva (b. 1995, Lagoa da Prata, Brazil) is a filmmaker, editor and researcher based between Barcelona and Belo Horizonte. She holds a BA in Cinema and Audiovisual from PUC Minas, a Master’s degree in Creative Documentary from Pompeu Fabra University, and a Postgraduate degree in Film Post-Production Supervision from ESCAC. In 2018, she founded Abre Caminho Filmes, an independent production company dedicated to author-driven cinema and Ibero-American storytelling.
Working primarily in documentary film, her practice explores memory, archives, gender and the intersections between personal and collective histories. Moving between creative documentary, essay film and audiovisual research, her work is driven by a particular interest in forgotten narratives and the preservation of cultural memory.
As an editor and creative collaborator, she has contributed to projects such as The Guardians of the Microcosmos (dir. Martin Schilt & Joris Van Alphen), Agnès Varda: On the Other Side of the Mirror (dir. Mercedes Álvarez, CCCB, Filmin), and Carcereiras (Cannes Docs 2025, It's All True 2026). Her films and audiovisual installations have been exhibited at institutions including Museu Tàpies (Barcelona), Casa das Rosas (São Paulo) and the Ropewalk Museum (United Kingdom).
She is currently in post-production with her debut feature documentary, I’m Not a Filmmaker, a personal and historical investigation into one of Brazil’s pioneering women filmmakers. The project has been supported by ANCINE/BRDE, BH nas Telas, Lei Paulo Gustavo, LABED-UPF and other international development programs including Brasil Cinemundi and Punto de Vista.
Alongside her filmmaking practice, she is the founder of Sara y Rosa, a platform dedicated to feminist film criticism and cultural exchange across Ibero-America, and teaches documentary filmmaking and production in Brazil and Spain.
